1. Measure the change

Use a weight tape consistently and record Body Condition Score. Photographs taken from the same position every two to four weeks are also useful.

2. Look at where condition is being lost

Loss of fat over the ribs and tailhead is different from loss of muscle over the topline. The two can occur together, but they do not always have the same explanation.

3. Measure forage

Do not rely on the size of a haynet or number of flakes. Weigh what is actually being offered and consider how much is left.

4. Check forage quality

Poor-quality or very mature forage may provide fewer usable calories than expected.

5. Watch the horse eat
