Colic is one of the biggest concerns for horse owners, but it is not a single disease and there is no way to prevent every case. What owners can do is reduce known risk factors through consistent feeding, hydration, forage, movement, dental and parasite care — while understanding how diet and the hindgut environment fit into the wider picture.

What should you check first?

Colic prevention starts with understanding the horse's normal routine and identifying avoidable changes.

1. Water

Is clean water continuously available? Check troughs, buckets and automatic drinkers rather than assuming they are working.

2. Forage

How much forage does the horse actually receive, and has the source or quality recently changed?

3. Concentrate meal size

Consider how much concentrate and starch are being supplied at one time rather than looking only at total daily feed.

4. Feed changes

Has a new feed, hay batch, supplement or feeding rate been introduced suddenly?

5. Pasture

Has turnout increased significantly or has grass changed rapidly with season or weather?

6. Manure

Know what is normal for the horse. Reduced output, unusually dry manure, loose manure or excess fecal water can provide useful information.

7. Exercise and turnout

Has normal movement suddenly reduced because of injury, weather, travel or management changes?

8. Water intake in cold weather

Dry forage intake may increase in winter while voluntary drinking decreases.

9. Dental health

Some forms involve impaction or obstruction. Others involve excessive gas, inflammation, altered intestinal movement, displacement or twisting of the intestine.

However, feeding and the hindgut environment are important in several preventable or manageable risk pathways.

The horse's cecum and colon contain a large microbial ecosystem responsible for fermenting fiber. This fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids that provide energy and contribute to normal intestinal function.

A 2025 peer-reviewed scientific review examined the role of short-chain fatty acids — particularly acetate, propionate and butyrate — in equine colic, intestinal barrier function and inflammatory pathways.

What this research does — and doesn't — tell us

EquiNectar has not yet been tested in a randomized controlled trial in which the primary endpoint was the number of colic episodes.

That distinction matters, but it should not obscure the significance of what has been measured.

EquiNectar acts upstream by changing the substrate reaching the hindgut. When less undigested starch and other rapidly fermentable carbohydrate reaches the cecum and colon, the microbial community is presented with a different nutritional environment.

Does lack of water increase the risk of colic?

Requirements vary substantially with temperature, exercise, lactation and whether the horse is eating pasture or dry forage. Cold weather deserves particular attention because horses may reduce water intake at the same time as consuming large amounts of dry hay. Check water sources every day and make sure freezing, contamination or equipment failure has not unexpectedly reduced access.
Can too much grain increase colic risk?
High grain or concentrate intake can increase digestive risk, particularly when large meals supply more rapidly fermentable carbohydrate than the horse can digest efficiently before it reaches the hindgut.
