None of these observations should be interpreted in isolation.

For example, a horse may drink considerably more simply because the weather is hotter or the diet has changed from grass to dry hay.

Conversely, a horse eating dry forage but drinking substantially less than normal deserves closer attention.

The most useful measure is usually change from that individual horse's established pattern.

A horse moving from moisture-rich pasture onto dry hay will need to obtain more water by drinking.

5. Has workload increased?

6. Is the weather hotter?

Heat increases sweat and evaporative losses.

7. Has the horse traveled?

Some horses drink less during journeys or reject unfamiliar water at competition venues.

Useful principles include:

• Provide unrestricted access to clean, fresh water wherever practical
• Check buckets, troughs and automatic drinkers every day
• Do not assume an automatic drinker is working because it looks full
• Clean troughs and buckets regularly
• Prevent water from freezing during cold weather
• Consider comfortably warm water during cold conditions
• Monitor actual intake when a horse is traveling or competing
• Take familiar water where practical if the horse is reluctant to drink away from home
• Remember that dry-hay diets generally increase drinking requirements
• Pay additional attention when pasture intake decreases
• Monitor water during hot weather and periods of heavy sweating
• Review salt and electrolyte requirements for horses working and sweating heavily
• Keep fresh water available alongside salt or electrolyte supplementation

Water presentation matters too.

A dirty trough, poorly positioned bucket, unfamiliar taste, frozen supply or malfunctioning automatic drinker can reduce intake even when water technically appears to be available.

In cold weather, some horses consume a greater total volume when warmer water is offered.

The objective is simple: make drinking easy, consistent and normal throughout the year.

The digestive connection

Where digestion fits

Water is involved throughout the horse's digestive system.

Feed is mixed with large volumes of fluid as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract, while water helps maintain the consistency and movement of intestinal contents.

The large intestine is particularly important.

Approximately 95% of the fluid that normally enters the large intestine is reabsorbed through the cecum and colon and returned to the bloodstream.

This means the hindgut is not simply a fermentation chamber. It is also a major site of water handling.

Diet changes water requirements too.

Fresh pasture already contains substantial moisture, while dry hay requires the horse to obtain much more water by drinking. This helps explain why moving onto winter hay or spending more time stabled can make water management particularly important.

Exercise and heat add another challenge because sweat losses can increase water requirements dramatically.

When intake falls, feed intake may also decline and dry intestinal contents can contribute to impaction risk.

Hydration is therefore a fundamental part of horse digestion and colic prevention, not simply something to think about after hard exercise.

Mean total short-chain fatty acids increased from 1,376 to 2,077 ppb — approximately 51% — alongside changes in bacterial groups associated with fiber degradation and fermentation.

These studies do not investigate hydration.

Their relevance is that water intake and digestive fermentation represent two different but closely connected parts of gastrointestinal management: maintaining appropriate fluid intake while supporting a favorable environment for the digestion and fermentation of the diet.

What this research does — and doesn't — tell us

How can I tell if my horse is dehydrated?
Possible signs include reduced drinking, dry or tacky gums, reduced urination, lethargy and changes in normal skin elasticity. However, simple checks such as a skin-pinch test are not precise enough to determine the severity of dehydration on their own. A horse that appears significantly dehydrated, particularly after strenuous exercise, prolonged travel, diarrhea or alongside signs of colic, should be assessed by a veterinarian.
