When large amounts of rapidly fermentable carbohydrate reach the hindgut, fermentation can increase acid production and lower pH. That change in environment can favor some microbial populations over others.

What exactly is EquiNectar?
EquiNectar is a daily equine digestive supplement built around Enzyme Rich Malt Extract from malted barley. It provides multiple naturally occurring digestive enzyme activities that help support digestion earlier in the digestive process.
Is EquiNectar a probiotic?
No. EquiNectar does not work by adding live bacteria to the horse's gut. Its enzymes act upstream, changing how the diet is broken down and therefore changing the nutritional environment reaching the horse's existing hindgut microbiome.
How much should I feed?
The ongoing amount depends on your horse's body weight and activity level. Standard US daily totals range from 5 to 12 fl oz.
