At Tharos, we focus on improving animal gut health through advanced nutrition and supporting the gut microbiome. We’re excited to share positive results from a recent study on our main product, EquiNectar®, designed to help manage gut issues in horses.

This trial, titled "Evaluating the Role of Enzyme-Rich Malt Extract in Supporting Gastrointestinal Health in Horses," was conducted using a select group of horses primarily from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. The study involved Army vets, who brought their expertise and dedication to the care of these remarkable animals, ensuring that the welfare of the horses was prioritized throughout the research process.

The study assessed the effectiveness of EquiNectar® on 34 horses from various breeds, including Irish Draught crosses, Cob crosses, Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds, and Shetland ponies. This diverse group allowed for a thorough evaluation of different conditions, making it particularly relevant for both civilian and military equine care.

Key Findings

  • 82% of horses treated with EquiNectar® showed significant improvement.
  • Clinical signs completely disappeared in 47% of cases.

Notable improvements were seen in issues like recurring abdominal pain, excessive fecal water, and hard-to-treat glandular disease. These results highlight EquiNectar®’s potential to provide relief for horses with serious gut problems. The study followed a standard protocol over two months, demonstrating its effectiveness in a short time.

Dr. Mark Bowen, a consultant for the study, said, “This field data opens new ways to treat complex conditions that often don’t respond to standard therapies.

He added that the results offer valuable insights into diseases, especially those resistant to traditional medication.

It’s important to note that while these results are encouraging, EquiNectar® is not a licensed treatment but a digestive supplement for horses. Qualified veterinarians should decide whether to include it in a treatment plan.

At Tharos, we understand the benefits of enzyme-rich malt extract for common digestive issues in horses. EquiNectar® is designed to:

  • Enhance nutrition by improving the digestion of feed and forage using natural digestive enzymes
  • Support the gut microbiome
  • Boost the overall health and condition of horses

The success of this study shows the need for innovative approaches in veterinary medicine and highlights EquiNectar®’s potential as an important tool for managing equine gut health, particularly for the horses serving in the Army.

We thank everyone involved in this research, including experts from Pool House Equine Hospital, End Cottage Vets, the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and Medicine Vet Equine Referrals. The study was funded by the IVC Evidensia Research Fund, reflecting the veterinary community’s dedication to finding new solutions for horse health.

Looking ahead, we are excited about the possibilities these findings offer. Although the study group was small and varied, the results show significant promise and deserve further investigation. We are committed to ongoing research and development to improve the lives of horses and support the veterinarians who care for them.

At Tharos, we believe that good gut health is essential for overall animal well-being. EquiNectar® is just one example of our commitment to this goal. We are also working on similar products for other species, including AviNectar for poultry and CaniNectar for dogs.
